The Inner World of Pain and Joy
1. The Human Experience: Pain and Joy Within |
Every experience of pain and joy we've had has happened within us. Happiness, sorrow, and ecstasy—all these emotions occur within our internal realm. As human beings, we are often regarded as the most advanced species on this planet. While we might have some distance to go, we are currently at the top. However, the phrase "I'm only human" is frequently used to denote limitations, rarely to express the vastness of our potential. This perspective misses a fundamental point about our existence.
2. Life Processes: Effortless for Animals, Complex for Humans
On this earth, every creature, from worms to birds and animals, manages their life processes quite efficiently with much smaller brains than ours. They are born, live, and reproduce without drama, while humans struggle with these very processes. Despite having the most advanced neurological system capable of sophisticated experiences and expressions, no other species struggles as much as humans. Our super-advanced brain, the most sophisticated instrument on earth, often becomes a source of complexity rather than a tool for ease.
3. The Unread User Manual: Misusing Our Complex Machine
The human brain, akin to a supercomputer, lacks a user manual for most people. Without understanding how to use this complex machine, everything becomes a problem. We find reasons to be unhappy in every situation—whether poor or rich, single or married, childless or with children. This universal unhappiness highlights our struggle with life's fundamental processes, turning our sophisticated capabilities into sources of suffering.
4. The Magnificent Process of Life: Riding the Wave
Life itself is not suffering or joy; it is a magnificent process. Our experience depends on how we engage with it. Are we riding the wave of life or getting crushed by it? Most of our suffering stems from our own psychological processes, not external circumstances. Our thoughts and emotions become sources of suffering, controlled not by external forces but by our internal responses. Shouldn't our inner experiences be determined by us and happen as we desire?
5. The Nature of Perception: Experiencing the World Within
Perception is an internal process. When we see or hear something, it occurs within our minds, not outside. Pain, pleasure, happiness, sorrow, agony, and ecstasy—all happen within us. The external world might stimulate these experiences, but their generation is internal. If our internal processes are not aligned with our desires, we've misunderstood the nature of life. Understanding this fundamental nature is what we call Inner Engineering.
6. Inner Engineering: Cultivating Inner Well-Being
Humanity has engineered the external world for comfort and convenience like never before. Yet, despite these advancements, our life experience has not improved proportionately. Well-being can only be generated from within, as human experience is an internal phenomenon. If we had control over our inner processes, most people would choose joy over suffering. However, our intelligence often turns against us, creating unnecessary suffering. To lead a joyful life, we need to understand and master our inner world, transforming our intelligence into a source of happiness rather than torment.
